The 4Cs that determine Diamond quality are Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight. Cut is the single biggest driver of a diamond’s beauty because it controls how light enters, bounces around, and returns to your eye as fire and scintillation. Aim for Excellent/Ideal cut grades with very good–excellent symmetry and polish; these signal balanced proportions (table, depth, crown and pavilion angles) that maximise sparkle. Don’t be tempted to trade cut for size—an extra few points of carat weight can look dull if the stone leaks light. If you’re comparing two otherwise similar stones, choose the one with better cut parameters every time; it will look brighter across real-world lighting, from daylight to across a crowded restaurant. Colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. Most buyers of natural diamonds settle for the “near-colourless” range (G–J), where the diamond still faces up white—but costs less than (D–F). The advantages of lab grown diamonds is that you can buy the colourless diamonds (D to F) without breaking the bank. You then don't have to worry about having to choose a yellow gold setting or the right shape of diamond so that the yellow of the diamond isn't highlighted. Another factor is fluorescence. Medium fluorescence can sometimes help lower colour stones appear a touch whiter in daylight but avoid strong fluorescence if it causes haziness. Above all, view the stone face-up in the setting style you like—colour is about overall impression and not just a letter.

Clarity describes the presence and visibility of internal inclusions and external blemishes, ranging from Flawless to Included. The goal is “eye-clean”: no inclusions visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. Choose the stone that looks clean to your naked eye. Remember, nobody takes a loupe to a party.

Carat is weight, not size—two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different depending on the cut and proportions. Balance is key—most people get the most visible beauty by prioritising cut first, then choosing a colour that looks white in their chosen metal, a clarity that’s eye-clean, and finally the largest carat weight that fits the budget.
